Safari Planning
How to combine northern Tanzania safari parks with Zanzibar beaches, including route order, flights, ideal trip length, and beach-area choices.
A safari and Zanzibar itinerary works best when the safari comes first and the beach extension comes last. Safari days involve early starts, dusty roads, game drives, and changing landscapes. Zanzibar is easier as the recovery ending, when travelers want slower mornings, warm water, and lighter activities.
For a compact trip, many travelers choose four to five safari days followed by three nights in Zanzibar. A more comfortable version gives six to seven safari days and four or five beach nights. Honeymooners, families, and travelers flying long-haul often appreciate the extra recovery time.
The route should protect connection timing. Northern Tanzania safaris usually start from Arusha or Moshi, then connect to Zanzibar by domestic flight from Arusha, Kilimanjaro, or sometimes airstrips depending on budget and routing. Avoid planning a tight international departure immediately after a long safari transfer.
Beach area matters. Nungwi and Kendwa are often chosen for sunsets and swimming, while Paje and Jambiani can feel quieter and more tidal. Stone Town, spice tours, snorkeling, diving, and dhow cruises can be added if you want culture and activity instead of only rest.
A practical starting point is 7 to 10 days total, depending on how many safari parks and beach nights you want.
Most travelers prefer safari first and Zanzibar last because the beach works well as a recovery ending.
